John was born on August 6th, 1829.  John's father was Edward Rowland and his mother was Catherine Farmer.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Rowland and Jane; his maternal grandparents were James Farmer and Tamar Alcock. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Tamar.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
