Herbert was born in 1896 in Knutsford.1   Herbert's father was Hugh Gidman and his mother was Elizabeth Drinkwater.  His maternal grandparents were William Drinkwater and Elizabeth Willett. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Joseph and Nellie.  He was the second youngest of the four children.
