Donald was born in 1917. Donald's father was James George Drinkwater and his mother was Eliza  Jane Goodier.  His paternal grandparents were William Drinkwater and Elizabeth Willett; his maternal grandparents were James Goodier and Mary Goodier. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William, James, John, Arnold, Ronald, Harold, Clara and Ruth.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 91 in 2008.
